4 Reasons to Consider Going Sugar-free

December 17, 2021

Going sugar-free can be quite tricky when you consider that it is in almost all the food that we consume. In fact, according to research, sugar has a way of tricking your brain into wanting more and more of it. It even has a similar effect that the one caused by cocaine and gambling.

However, lowering your sugar intake or even doing a sugar detox can be especially beneficial for those who have difficulties with blood sugar levels or systemic inflammation. Furthermore, it can help those that are looking to shed off a few extra pounds.

Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack

According to a study done over the course of 15 years, those who had a higher sugar intake were two times more likely to die from heart disease compared to those who consumed much less of it. Sugar is particularly hard on the liver. It can cause fatty liver disease, which is associated with heart disease risk. Additionally, Sugar intake also increases weight and inflammation. This may cause chronic inflammation, which is hard on the arteries and organs, especially the heart.

It will improve your gut health

When doing a sugar-free detox, you’ll probably start incorporating foods in your diet that are rich in dietary fiber like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These foods are especially beneficial for the gut. They help increase the number of healthy microbiota in the gut. By doing so, the frequency of bowel movement increases, and it reduces the transit time.

It may reduce the risk of depression and improve your mental health

Research shows that “higher sugar consumption was linked to depression”. It affects dopamine levels, which can lead to it becoming an addiction. When your brain stops receiving dopamine, your mood may go from happy, to sad, or even depressed. While it isn’t the direct cause of anxiety, the continuous roller-coaster of being sugar high and the release of adrenaline, as well as insulin, could contribute to feeling anxiety, especially in those who already suffer from it.

Reduce memory loss

Consuming high levels of sugar can affect memory loss. While the brain does need glucose, too much of it can speed off the aging of cells. This may lead to faster memory loss.
