Health Benefits of Eating Dark Chocolate

June 3, 2022

Attention all chocolate lovers! Recently, experts and studies have proven the health benefits of eating dark chocolate for our bodies. Of course, it all depends on portions, percentage of cocoa solids, and sugar, but it is still a tasty treat full of nutrients.

Quality and Quantity

Before listing all the healthy benefits of dark chocolate, it’s important we address that not all chocolate products are the same. When looking for one to try, choose the one with the higher cocoa percentage (75%—80%).

While cacao in its natural form is full of healthy antioxidants and nutrients, most candy brands process it with a lot of added sugar. The goal is to pick those with a deep, rich flavor. The more organic and natural, the better.

Keep in mind that for you to take advantage of all the benefits, you need to be careful with portions as well. Enjoyed as an occasional treat, 20g of dark chocolate (about six small pieces or two large squares) is just fine.

Benefits of Dark Chocolate

Eating it doesn’t only taste and feels good. It has essential nutrients for our general well-being such as magnesium, iron, zinc, fiber, and protein.

Some of its direct benefits:

Because of its flavanols, it may reduce the risk of heart disease.

It can improve blood flow and improve brain function.

It’s rich in polyphenols, a compound that can help regulate the gut microbiota.

It can help us cope with stress and anxiety.

Packed with antioxidants, dark chocolate can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.

Remember, balance is everything! Treat yourself with dark chocolate every once in a while, but keep the focus on maintaining a varied and healthy diet.
